West Columbia: Columbia Historical Museum

West Columbia was called Columbia when it was the first official capital of the Republic of Texas in 1836. It now features a replica of the cabin where Texas’ first Congress convened. A diorama at the Columbia Historical Museum depicts the town in the 1820s as an important river crossing. The site also maintains a restored school house that served as one of Texas' Rosenwald Schools, educating post-emancipation African American youth.
