TURKEY ARCHIVES

Curious about the history of turkeys in Cuero? Try visiting the Cuero Heritage Museum where the exhibit “Cuero Talks Turkey” explains Cuero’s long and historic association with everyone’s favorite holiday bird. The museum also offers an overview of Cuero’s past, an interesting timeline of events and personalities that began in 1872, the year Cuero was established. This community grew quickly after the hurricane of 1875 wiped out the coastal port of Indianola. Indianola citizens abandoned the coastal ruin and relocated to Cuero, many of them bringing parts or all of their surviving homes. They also brought with them a penchant for Romanesque and Revival styles of architecture, a factor that would inspire a listing for many of the surviving Cuero buildings in the National Register. Today, the museum’s 1915 Italian Renaissance Revival home served as a post office until the 1960’s and is included in the Cuero Commercial Historic District.
