In 1824, Martín de León settled 41 Mexican families here and named the town Guadalupe Victoria to honor the first president of the Republic of Mexico. After Texas’ independence, Anglos renamed the settlement Victoria. Victoria's sprawling Evergreen Cemetery bears the graves of many pioneers, including members of the de León family.
